Jamie Carragher Explains Why Erik ten Hag Should Sell Cristiano Ronaldo Immediately Next Season
Speaking about what Erik ten Hag sho’uld do with Cristiano Ronaldo at Man United, Jamie Carragher told The Ove’rlap: “(Jurgen) Klopp comes into Liverpool straight away, they’d b’ought players under Brendan Rodgers that summer.
“I think (Christian) Benteke cost them a’bout £35/40million it was a few quid, he was a big signing, center-forw’ard, and he was like ‘You’re not for me, out!’ And making that big bo’ld decision straight away, it makes everyone sit up and think ‘Oh this fel’la takes this job seriously!’
“I’m convinced he’s (Ten Hag) go’t to do that with Ronaldo, whether he’s allowed to or not, and I’ve s’aid this consistently throughout this season, that was not a good sig’ning.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the grea’test players of all time, and I’m seen as criticizing him – Ronaldo is a milli’on times better than I could ever be, I couldn’t lace his boots, obvi’ously, but I’m not saying that to be disrespectful to him, he’s ama’zing.
“But Ronaldo has never played in a te’am this bad, he’s played in some of the best teams and has the attitude of wan’ting to be the main man, trying to get the goals, driving peo’ple on, and when you’re in a great team, that’s something I’m se’eing as a positive.
“When you’re not playing in a gre’at team it can be something that is seen as a negative, and I think it has be’en a negative this season. Manchester United can’t go into next sea’son with a center-forward who is going to be 38, even if he does score goa’ls that’s not right for Man United.
“United need to buy a striker, but who do you bu’y? Do you buy one who’s going to play, or one who’s going to sit o’n the bench? What do you do? If you buy a really good one then he has to pl’ay, and Ronaldo has to go on the bench.
“Ronaldo would be a massive problem for Manche’ster United next season if he wasn’t playing every week, we’ve se’en it this season, even when he’s coming off and there were times w’here the manager was right to take him off or put him on the be’nch, but he’s kicked up a fuss.
“This is the most powerful he will ever be, the m’anager’s the most powerful the first day in the job, because he’s t’here and he should be able to make big decisions on the basis of tha’t and I’d make that big decision as the other top managers have don’e that make everyone sit up and take notice.”
Ten Hag has already praised Ronaldo, call’ing him a ‘giant’ and indicating that the Portuguese forward has a role in h’is team next season.
Despite that, Erik is likely to sign a quality str’iker in the summer to decrease the workload for Cristiano next sea’son and use him optimally in the biggest g’ames.
