Harry Maguire Set to Lose Captain Armband to De Gea

Big Flop Harry Maguire Set to Lose Capt’ain Armband to De Gea
Spanish goalkeeeper David de Gea is rep’ortedly set to become the next Manchester United captain and has the sup’port of the dressing room.

New manager Erik ten Hag is under press’ure to take the armband off current skipper Harry Maguire after a poor cam’paign. The Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League and fa’iled to challenge for silverware, with Maguire’s own performances often c’riticised.

Ten Hag refused to confirm whether Maguire wo’uld retain the captaincy during his unveiling and it’s claimed most of the sq’uad want Spain international De Gea to take the armband ahead of t’he England defender and veteran forward Cristiano Rona’ldo.

According to The Sun and the Mirror, Te’n Hag is happy to give the armband to the most popular cand”idate in the dressing room. It’s believed De Gea is the ‘overwh’elming candidate’ because of the ‘respect and belief’ he com’mands from his playing colleagues.

Yet the reported move is not vie’wed as a ‘rebellion’ against Maguire and he is still expected to be a key me’mber of the squad. The 29-year-old was surprisingly made United’s cap’tain in January 2020, just six months after arriving from Leicester for £80mi’llion.

Maguire impressed during his first two seas’ons at the club – playing 107 games in all competitions – but has faile’d to replicate that form since England’s defeat in the final of Euro 20_20. He missed eight Premier League games this term due to in”jury and form.

It would be fair to assume that Unite’d and Ten Hag had ideas before the end of the season of who they w”anted to sign but no real decisions could have been made due to the Dut’chman’s full focus being on Ajax. This might not have been so bad if it w’as not for the fact that a huge rebuild is needed this sum’mer.

A goalkeeper, centre-back, right-back, cen’tral midfielders and strikers are all likely to be on Ten Hag’s shopping list a’nd he has just two months to find them. In fairness, the signs suggest Unit’ed are looking to get business done sooner than in recent ye’ars.

Frenkie de Jong, Jurrien Timber and Dar’win Nunez are all strongly linked with a move to the north west. Ho’wever, United are no longer that golden ticket destination they once w’ere
